Issues in Health: Safety deficits in abortifacient/”contraceptive” products
The so-called reproductive and "health care" industry gave America all of the following with FDA approval:
Their "safe" Dalkon Shield, which killed and injured thousands women, and was removed only when the lawsuit settlements bankrupted the maker, AH Robins, original maker of Robitussin, and now owned by another death merchant, Wyeth-Ayerst Labs.
Their "safe" contraceptive/abortifacient so-called “birth control” pills that cause breast, liver and cervical cancer (World Health Organization), among dozens of other serious and, at times deadly, side effects.
Their "safe" Mifeprex (mifepristone) abortion pills that are killing and injuring women around the globe. In the US, already 8 documented cases of women dying from Mifeprex have occurred and hundreds more have been seriously injured by this anti-progesterone steroid.
Their "safe" so-called “contraceptive”/abortifacient “birth control” patch, which killed a dozen women in their late teens and 20s in 2004 alone. The FDA's own death and injury reports document an even higher rate of blood clots from the patch than from the pill, and recently received an upgrade strong label warning addition by the FDA.
Their "safe" “contraceptive”/abortifacientDepo Provera, which now carries a black box warning label for physicians because it causes irreversible bone density loss, multiple bone fractures and knee replacements in girls after only eight injections.
Their "safe" “contraceptive”/abortifacient Norplant, which was finally removed from the market because of numerous lawsuits. This killer caused thrombosis (formation of blood clots), liver dysfunction and partial or complete blindness.
For women 18 and over, they give their "safe" “contraceptive”/abortifacient Plan B, whose sole active ingredient is levongestrel -- the same active ingredient as in the outlawed Norplant. It is given in doses of up to 50 times that seen in the common so-called “birth control” pill. Long term effects of using this high powered steroid in young women has NOT yet been studied.
Conclusion: The collusion between the FDA and the so-called “contraceptive”/abortion industry was made even clearer when Sen. Hillary Clinton told the FDA interim director, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, that he would not be approved as director if he did not approve Plan B for over the counter (OTC). So much for concern for women's health care.
