*A Letter to Pharmacists who Practice with a Conscience:*
Dear Pharmacists for Life International Members,
My name is Liz Chiarello and I am a researcher at the University of
California, Irvine conducting a study on pharmacists' professional and
ethical decision-making. I will be interviewing pharmacists in retail
and hospital settings in four states about the kinds of ethical
challenges they have faced in their daily practice and how they have
managed to resolve them.
I want to make sure that participants include pharmacists who care
about conscience rights, so PFLI has graciously offered to pass this e-mail along to
you. Participation in the study will involve an interview of
approximately 30-45 minutes in length and a brief standardized survey.
Unfortunately, there is no compensation for participating in the
study, but it is a good opportunity to contribute to research on
pharmacists, a group that receives little attention in the
sociological literature on health care and the professions.
If you are interested in participating in the study and you live in
New Jersey, Mississippi, California, or Kansas, we can arrange to meet
in person. I will be interviewing pharmacists in New Jersey from
September 25-October 9, 2009 and will return to California after that.
Interviews in Mississippi and Kansas will take place in January and
February 2010. If you are in another state and would like to
participate, we can arrange to talk over the phone instead. Of course,
all interviews are confidential and information about specific
participants will not be shared with anyone else.
For more information or to set up an appointment, you can reach me by
phone at 541-543-3250 or e-mail at echiarel at uci.edu.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Liz Chiarello

The Christian Medical Association has sent a wake-up call to Washington.
The communication is the result of a petition signed by over 10,000
individuals. David Stevens, president of the Christian Medical & Dental
Associations, explains the objective of the petition. "We just sent a
letter to President Obama as well as to members of Congress expressing
concern over right of conscience and the fact that it's not protected in
any of the [healthcare reform] legislation that's been proposed," he
says. "In fact, there are direct attacks on right of conscience, which
would force healthcare providers to participate in abortions as well as
other procedures."
