Debi Vinnedge, founder and director of COG for Life, reports that a
recent stem cell breakthrough that turns adult skin cells into
"embryonic" stem cells is not as pro-life as was first thought. In fact,
pro-lifers may have celebrated too soon because they did not examine the
methods used more closely.

It turns out that both Dr. Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University in Japan,
whose study was published in the journal /Cell,/ and Dr. James Thomson
of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, whose study was published in
the journal /Science/, used several versions of the 293 aborted fetal
cell lines to modify the DNA of the host adult skin cells in order to
accomplish the cell reprogramming.

Further, Dr. Theresa Deisher, research and development director at Ave
Maria Biotechnology Company, a research firm dedicated to finding
pro-life alternatives for unethical human therapeutics, states that it
is not necessary to use aborted fetal cells to produce the reprogrammed
stem cells.
